THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOS

Watch my YouTube video about these photos.

My friend Sara is an accomplished photographer here in Northern New Jersey. She knows the area better than me and I had been bugging her for months to take me out shooting. She finally acquiesced and we met at Stokes State Forest near Branchville, NJ. Sara knew of a secret place deep within the forest with a cascading waterfall surrounded by soft, mossy stream banks. I was having a bit of a tough time that day due to an old hip injury, but Sara was patient and we eventually made our way through the woods and down into the mossy ravine. It was late in the day and the sun was setting quickly. The good news is the low light allowed for longer exposures which in turn provided a soft, cottony look to the flowing water. We ploddingly made our way upstream and eventually reached the foundation of an old stone mill. Maybe 100 years ago they used horse-drawn carts and this rudimentary mill to turn out product. Today, the carefully piled stones are a gateway back to more simpler times.
