THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOS
Spring could not get here fast enough this year. The past Winter wasn't particularly cold, but it did seem quite long. In any event, I finally did something I have been wanting to do for years: head down to Washington, DC for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. More than 3,000 Yoshino Cherry Trees line the Tidal Basin and Potomac River near the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials. Many came as a gift from the Japanese people in 1912. Since then, every Spring these trees burst into a brilliant display of floral ecstasy. An estimated one million people visit the Cherry Blossom Festival each year (it seemed like most of them were there the day I went!) It runs from mid-March to mid April so start planning your trip today.
